[Shefflea-broadband] VPN services over broadband

Colleagues,

I have been speaking to a number of network managers and technical support
providers about the provision of remote access to school networks via
Virtual Private Network. Until recently this has not been available from BT
at an acceptable cost. However, BT are now offering the service at a cost of
£100 per account setup with no annual rental charge. The recommended method
is to create single accounts for a 'type' of user - typically this would be
'pupils' or 'school staff'. 

We are about to pilot the service with a couple of schools before half term,
and if successful we will then roll out from early June. 

There is another factor that you may wish to consider, however. The
Yorkshire & Humber Grid for Learning foundation, on behalf of the LEAs in
the region, is making some changes to the network, so that later this year
there will be new providers involved in both the regional network
(Sheffield-Leeds) and also in ISP provision. Therefore, at a point later
this year BT will no longer be providing Internet services to Sheffield and
therefore the VPN provider will change. The current timescale for the ISP
changeover is November 2006, though this is still being planned and is not a
final date. 

If you would like to go down the VPN route with BT, please complete the
attached proforma and send it to me attached to an email authorising the
CYPS to ask BT to set up VPN on your behalf. Please note that we will regard
your return of this email as authorisation to bill you for the £100 change
request fee. 

We will action the requests in batches to improve efficiency, and we will
only start the rollout once the pilot schools are successfully working.
