[SlugBug] [HELP] dead debian X mouse

hi all,

first off -- a quick introduction. i'm chained to the keyboard most
days, and decided to give debian a go. it's fairly okay on my work
workstation, although the install instructions i compiled are a mile
long (little hardware is correctly autodetected/setup).

at home, it's a different story. i tried to go with stable, and include
a mix of testing/unstable as needs be (in order to get a more stable
system). at present, the mouse is dead and i've tried everything i can
think of to bring it back to life.

i'm pretty sure it all happened awhile ago when i apt-get updated or
installed something hideous. if anyone wants a look at:

dpkg -l | grep ^ii

you're more than welcome.

any ideas on how to tackle this? thanks in advance,
