I'm not quite sure that I signed up for that job, particularly since I wouldn't 
split the code if I was in charge of making the decisions!

I'm happy to contribute where I can, but I don't see myself as being the 
coordinator of the two different versions.  My eneriges will be devoted, in the 
short run at least, to (a) to adding features/fixes to the new code,  (b) 
reworking the PTAssembler code and documentation to accommodate the two 
different code bases, and (c) answering e-mails from confused users!

Also...if we are going to create a new module for the code then I would suggest 
using a name other than pano12.  If I understand correctly, the current 
proposal is to have "pano12" and "libpano12"? Or something similar?  My 
experience with the average end user is that these will be assumed to be the 
same thing.  I'd suggest "pano20" or something more obviously different.
