[meersbrook-house] message to local groups

Hi Liz and David

I've kept an eye on the forum (I'm wary of posting on it for
planning/campaigning as posts are public and I assume
searchable/catalogued) but there was a big jump to talk of interviews,
spokesperson, and a press release. Re the message to church groups etc.
once it has been clarified which local groups are receiving this, can we
change

"raise awareness and collect the communities ideas so that we can present a
strong case on behalf of our community in preparation to the SCC public
consultation. "
to "raise awareness and collect ideas so we can present a strong case to
Sheffield Council for community control of the building"

We are a long way off a public consultation being announced, ideally there
won't be one - no decisions have been announced yet and the option of
letting Parks Dept stay in the building for an extended time to give us
more time is a real one for SCC. We should try to bring proposals to the
council ASAP, which would stop the process leading to public consultation -
we shouldn't come across as expecting or waiting for a public consultation.

David the comment re 'self selected' is of course potentially political -
there's no easy answer to it though and just because 60 people went to a
meeting doesn't mean they all had the same views. They didn't and we don't
have a good record of people's views (though it was obvious what most
people thought). So it begs the question - what do other local residents
actually think about all this, hence my point - having put the word out
locally we need a record of local opinion - then claims re strong public
opposition to sale will be incontestable. That evidence could help persuade
SCC to give us some time/work with us on this but could also be used if
(heaven forbid!) things got bad and we needed to take the Local Government
Ombudsman or Judicial Review routes. From those perspectives, the views of
neighbours in the immediate vicinity of the park count the most and that is
where the validity of any public consultation or decision to ignore
restrictive covenants would best be tested.
re Management Committee, I mean the one the Friends will hopefully have in
the near future, not the Steering Group.

Nick
