Dear All,
I've been meaning to post to the list for some time as the work we've
been doing at Proboscis on 'public authoring' / knowledge mapping and
sharing through the Urban Tapestries project and now the Social
Tapestries programme seems to connect well with the aims of the Open
Documentary project. The Urban Tapestries software platform is
currently being significantly upgraded and we hope to have a public
beta version for testing later this year. Meantime we published three
reports on the UT project back in June which you may find interesting:

Our current focus is on working directly with actual people in real
communities (rather than convened groups) to investigate what people
can make of high-resolution spatial annotation in respect of their
daily life and the kinds of knowledge and experiences they wish to
share. We're working with a primary school, a short-life housing
cooperative and the tenant management group of a large West London
housing estate to explore these issues.
The big issue with spatial annotation is the proprietary geographic
information systems (the Ordnance Survey data) which makes creating
true FLOSS systems very hard. We have been working hard to engage the
UK national mapping agency (OS) in adopting a Creative Commons-type
license for non-commercial/non-profit use of this type and have made
some headway. Given the new EU Directive on Public Sector Information
which came into force in July, it might be worth having a part of the
wider project consider the implications for Open Documentary of these
issues too, especially as many of the groups who might adopt these
technologies might be funded, use the resources of or even be
considered part of the public sector.
best,
Giles
