What's the thinking behind using apt instead of redhat's rpm? Can you use 
both on the same system and are they compatible?

You might want to check out Autoupdate, a perl script for automatically 
downloading/installing the newest RPMs:
http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~gerald/ftp/autoupdate/
I gave it a successful test run some months ago but still haven't got round 
to installing it properly.
