I've never bothered with any of this- though I'm sure I should. 
http://freshmeat.net/projects/htcheck/ was an almost top hit for "broken
link" in freshmeat.

It's text-based so should be cron'able.

Failing that it could be scripted with your pick of curl/wget
sed+bash/perl. I'm guessing it's not worth the effort to write a new
script
