Thanks Chris  and everyone else. Downloaded three to try to get to work over the weekend (Vector, Tiny and Basic), and yes, I'd rather not run in text mode if it's  possible : )

Incidentally , I don't know if this will be of use to anyone, but I use a Mac at work  with Internet Exploder 5.1. I've downloaded Knoppix , Dyn:bolic and Suse Live before now and burned isos which seem to function perfectly. At the end of the download (which appears to be more than a few Kbytes short of a lunchbox) the download manager  says it is "waiting for data". This "waiting" can go on as long as you are willing to watch it. At this point if you exit I.E. and although the iso file appears with warning "!" symbol  the  resulting CD  runs just fine  (on a pc).
