Thanks, don't know how I didn't find it before.  I've fixed the 
script and put it here with some examples:

It's tolerably fast, converting a 6000x6000 fisheye to stereographic 
in about 70 seconds.  Though ideally this projection would be just 
another output option in hugin (I don't know how to do this, I guess 
it needs to be added to pano12 as well?).
