For using hugin/nona/enblend:

* 256MB RAM is simply unusable.  2GB RAM is much better and you can do a lot.

* Any modern CPU is ok, the stitching speed is more-or-less
  proportional to the CPU speed, so the faster the better.

* SMP doesn't give you anything at all with these tools (though that
  may change in the future).

* Performance is basically the same regardless of operating system.
  The money you save by going for Linux can be spent on a very large
  monitor.

* Get a very large monitor.
