I know those problems, working with full spherical panos of 50
and more images...

Not sure if this is a good idea, setting the points, and especially
the auto picker *should* imho work an the full resolution images.

How about storing the images in memory as jpegs and only uncompress
them when they are loaded into the control point picker?

I agree that it's an important point to tackle. Still the solution
shouldn't loose accuracy.
