[OccupySheffield] OccupySheffield Digest, Vol 6, Issue 5

Dear Occupiers

Currently I am appealing against the regime's decision to put me in the ESA
work group from Incapacity benefit. This is because of disability. However,
there are other reasons why it is important to appeal being placed in a
work group if you have disabilities making it very difficult, or impossible
to support oneself through the pressures of full-time employment. These
reasons include:

 - the fact that most (or all) work group claimants will see their DLA
taken away very soon, their ESA continually assessed using a discriminatory
computer programme run by a private company who to achieve their bonuses
have to declare a certain number of disabled people non-disabled.

-Advice from personal advisors is intended to be sugary-sweet, therefore
painting a false picture of what lies ahead

- compulsory work activity for little or no pay (to be rolled out to all
age groups)

- threat of losing welfare

-threat of homelessness

-the removal of state security (something which Incapacity Benefit provided)

-removal of the potential to take part in higher education (through means
testing)

-lack of support to realise work-focused ideas and self-employment

I could continue, but I'm writing a dissertation on poverty in the UK, so
am time-limited.

My point is, can occupy do anything to raise awareness of these and similar
issues to the claimants themselves, many of whom are no doubt going
blissfully along with the regime's plans, unaware of the horrors of living
the rest of their lives on £60 odd per week ?

Maybe leafleting the entrances of job centres and private employment
agencies ?

It is possible that by doing this, occupy and related
organisations/movements could swell their numbers dramatically.

Anyway, all for now, back to the poverty line.

All the best

Rick B
