[999nhs-coordinators] RALLIES AND PUBLICITY

Thanks Joanne for your reply.

Stuart is right to say that loads of people organise marches and demos without public liability insurance.. I've done that and I wouldn't normally have raised the issue at all. However my query was generated by the Council demanding proof of PLI if we book the park and possibly bandstand we have chosen for the bank holiday arrival of the march.

You've answered my query which is that we would probably have to do this separately particularly if we use the bandstand. Fair enough. I've never done it before and wondered how do it most cheaply.

I wouldn't have thought that anyone organising more general rallies particularly in town centres etc need be bothered. After all, as the police said to me, this is hardly a march which is likely to generate public conflict.

You need to be very careful about what you are saying to people about insurance. I have organised demos with over 100,000 people and have never been concerned about insurance liability.

Yuu can't curtail people's democratic right too protest based on a clause in an insurance policy.

You have essentially sent out an email setting limits on the numbers at these rallies which fundamentally undermines what we are trying to do. Can you think carefully about this before sending out such emails. I'm now extremely concerned.

    Hi Mike,

It is fine to have public addresses, leafleting, meet the marchers etc. as long as the numbers of participants per day are less than 500. Best thing is to not refer to it as a rally - could call it "Greet the Marchers" or similar. Staging will not be insured. If there are likely to be more than 500 participants in the leg/meetings per day, or you need to use staging, then it will need to be insured seperately. It wasn't feasible to cover the march and rallies with 500+ participants, as we would be effectively asking to have 21 large rallies covered. So if you don't call it a rally, don't use staging, and total participants number less than 500, you should be good to go.

    Kind regards

    Jo

Hello - please could you clarify about insurance cover for the rallies.

Our rally, on August Bank Holiday, is currently planned to be at the end of the leg into Sheffield as a shortish open air event in a public park (weather permitting) and is intended as a welcome to the marchers rather than something which is happening separately. We will also have one or two stops on our route out which will include pretty short mini-rallies consisting of local welcomes. I would have thought these should count as integral parts of the march and therefore be covered by the main public liability insurance (we have to provide proof of insurance in order to use the park). We obviously don't want to go to the expense of separate insurance unless it is absolutely necessary and if it is, it might in fact be cheaper to have a top up to the main march insurance rather than take something out separately. What's the view from Darlington? and how are others dealing with this?

Thanks Mike Simpkin / Alistair Wardrope

        Hi Ann

Rehana here and yes we can do this where needed providing we raise the money for mini bus hire but yes we can sort this out.

Hi Emma - a question first of all - we have been working on the basis that one / two of the marchers will be available to speak at the rallies and if the march is running behind the start of the rally they will be mini bussed up in time. Is that the case?

Hi all - thanks to everyone for their hard work so far. We have 6 legs signed off (in green on The Spreadsheet) and I know many more will be signed off in the next few days. If we haven't been in touch with each other today, and you think your route is now fixed, let me know and we can discuss.

Next up, we need to think about rallies and publicity.

Not all locations will have a rally. We do need to know if you are planning one though, please take a look at filling in the Rallies tab on The Spreadsheet. Rehana and Jo will want to approve the speakers you line up. You all know the drill I am sure - we have no particular political or organisational affiliation, so need to reflect that balance in our choice of speakers (labour, green, unions, healthcare campaigners, faith communities, celebs etc)

On the publicity front, we want to start to personalise the website by having team members on there. So that marchers can contact you, please send the following to me at emma_tyers at yahoo.co.uk by Wednesday next week:

            Photo

Name - however you'd prefer to be called on the site

Email - I'd advise that you create a new email address and keep your real one for friends and family!

Route - I know we have this in the spreadsheet but for some legs, we have handovers at county boundaries

That's it for now. Keep up the good work!

            Emma

            Xx
