as it's been so quiet, perhaps we can all have a collective chew on this
little number which i have been grappling with for six months or more.

i have a two Dell Inspiron 8000 laptops which dual-boot W2K and
RedHat9/Fedora. i cannot start an X session on either.

here is a general spec with regard to the graphics:

Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop with ATI 16MB Mobility M4 graphics card.
Display: 15.1" XGA, SXGA+, UXGA 1400x1050 LCD

please find below a copy of the error log. the important stuff is at
the end where it says:

>> (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
>>
>> Fatal server error:
>> no screens found

the relevant portion of XF86Config looks like this:

> Section "Monitor"
> Identifier "Monitor0"
> VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
> ModelName "LCD Panel 1024x768"
> HorizSync 31.5 - 48.5
> VertRefresh 40.0 - 70.0
> Option "dpms"
> EndSection
>
> Section "Device"
> Identifier "Videocard0"
> Driver "r128"
> VendorName "Videocard vendor"
> BoardName "ATI Rage 128 Mobility"
> EndSection
>
> Section "Screen"
> Identifier "Screen0"
> Device "Videocard0"
> Monitor "Monitor0"
> DefaultDepth 16
> SubSection "Display"
> Depth 16
> Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
> EndSubSection
> EndSection

i have tried booting using Knoppix (it works) and copying the XF86Config
file over but this has not worked i'm afraid.

i have STFW and looked through http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html
but to avail so far.

the best i have come up with so far is contacting this guy -
http://groups.google.co.uk/groups?selm=16727c3e.0306022054.645d0c0e%40posting.google.com&oe=utf-8&output=gplain
- who has sent me a ddcprobe but i'm reluctant to run it as i can't be
sure of what it does.

can anybody make sense of this at all?

with best regards

bb
