In April 2004 Sheffield's ground-breaking free technology lab ACCESS
SPACE is four years old. To celebrate, Access Space is running a special
open workshop day, mounting three simultaneous exhibitions, and throwing
a party. Everyone's invited!

The party features some of the UK's leading exponents of no- and
low-cost digital music and media, including:--
>From BIRMINGHAM: Brian Duffy's MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA. Brian Duffy
rewires boot-sale audio electronics like "Speak-and-Spell" and "Hula
Barbie" to release a massive industrial noise-scape.
>From NEWCASTLE: SPOONBENDER conjures electronic beats from two Gameboys
and a Kaoss Pad using "LSDJ".
>From BARNSLEY via LONDON: Artist, Musician and Programmer Tom Betts,
a/k/a NULLPOINTER "Pure Data" for live audio and video generation.
>From SHEFFIELD: Experimental techno sounds by MATTHEW GRAY, working with
home-hacked live audio software, chopping familiar sounds into wonky new
forms.

doesn't everyone use it? Because they don't know how. Before the party
Access Space shows you how to get involved in the no-cost software
revolution with a series of presentations and workshops and film
screenings from midday.
GImP - Powerful image processing software.
Processing - A simple language to author complex dynamic Java graphics.
ImageMagick - Warp, distort, overlay and reprocess hundreds of images at
once.
Pure Data - Generates sounds and video in real time.

REDUNDANT TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE: "Lowtech Videowall".
Shown several times in Europe and twice in London, for the first time
RTI bring this high-profile artwork to their home city. Who says you
can't do video streaming with 37 trash computers?

GATESCHERRYWOLMARK: "Intersections"
Digital images and text from the ongoing collaboration of artists
Eleanor Gates and Jean Cherry with writer Jenny Wolmark. Including
scrawled text and intricate textiles, supermarket shopping and Hong Kong
streets, the pictures combine the exotic with the banal.

RICHARD BOLAM: "Hyperscape2"
Sheffield-based technological artist and mac guru Richard Bolam creates
an immersive generative soundscape with those cute, but obsolete baby
Macs everyone binned last year. The piece explores the fluid
relationship between order, chaos and human perception.
