You can change what you log in with by choosing the the Session menu at the 
login screen and picking which window manager you want to use.

I use kde (I like gnome as well but I'm waiting for it to get a decent file 
selector :)) 

I find that although you can run both gnome and kde apps under either, gnome 
apps are generally faster when running under gnome and kde apps faster when 
running under kde - just my personal experience.
