All,

BT have been in touch this week to inform us that a significant number
of schools are using ip addresses for broadband proxy servers, rather
than using the server names, as recommended in the setup instructions
issued to schools converting to broadband from previous ISP networks.
This currently affects, to some degree (i.e. anything from one or two
computers up to a whole network), 11 secondary schools, 32 primaries and
3 special schools.

The proxy server addresses are:

proxy.bty-h.org.uk port 80 (challenges for username and password)
primaryproxy.bty-h.org.uk port 80 ( preset content filtering at pre 11
level)
shefproxy.bty-h.org.uk port 80 (preset authentication for sheffield
at pre16 level)

These addresses should work as long as DNS forwarding is set up to point
to the BT DNS servers at 10.0.4.21 and 10.0.4.22.

BT have provided a list of ip addresses of machines that they say are
using the proxy ip addresses rather than the names . I'll provide this
information to the individual schools, beginning later today.

If this creates problems, please seek advice from your local CLC
technical manager.

One or two people have mentioned problems that they believe are related
to browsing speeds when using BT's DNS. If you do experience problems of
this type or any other significant performance issues, please do report
them via the SIMS helpdesk, email mailto:ed-simshelp at sheffield.gov.uk

I will be on leave from Wednesday afternoon 20 July until 8 August.
Please contact Jim Shelston or CLC technical managers with queries &
issues during this time.
Regards,

Andy
