<font face="Arial, sans-serif">Sheffield Renewables has now launched
its Community Share offer, giving local people the opportunity to
fund the development of and benefit from a hydro-electric
generator
at Jordan dam on the river Don. </font><font face="Arial,
sans-serif">The
scheme will be Sheffield's first community owned renewable energy
scheme, and England’s largest community owned hydro scheme.
Profits will be used to fund local green initiatives, including
more
renewable energy</font><font face="Arial, sans-serif">.</font>

“<font face="Arial, sans-serif">Community Shares are a way for
local people to invest in schemes that might not otherwise go
ahead,
and to be involved in changing our city to a greener way of
living. Individuals, organisations or companies can invest any
amount from
£250 to £20,000. Those on a low income can also invest in
instalments,” said Dr Mark Wells, a Director of Sheffield
Renewables and also a volunteer.</font></p>

<font face="Arial, sans-serif">The Share Offer Launch took place
on
Saturday 15th September in Sheffield city centre. As well as
learning about Sheffield Renewable and the Share Offer scheme,
attendees heard from Simon Tilley who led on the development </font><font
face="Arial, sans-serif">of
a community owned wind turbine in the village of Hockerton in
Nottinghamshire, also funded by a community share offer. The
turbine
started generating power in 2010 and in its first year had
generated
as much power as the village consumed!</font></p>

<font face="Arial, sans-serif">Since the Launch, Sheffield
Renewables
has raised £23,800 which means that they now have £73,800 of the
£250,000 they are aiming for. </font><font face="Arial,
