Summary: automatic gain adjustment

Initial Comment:
when pictures are taken using auto exposure (as is the
default in most digital camera's) there are variances
between intensity of the different images composing the
panorama.
is there a possibility to compensate for this?
maybe using the EXIf info ?
(autostich has a means to do this, which is called
'automatic gain' but I have no idea how it's doing it's
thing)
