Agreed. Overall, while the wxChoice works well for large numbers of
images, the tabs work better for smaller numbers (less than 10). It was
just an extension of what ippei had done for the mac, and I was just
trying to unify the behaviour across all platforms. 

If you look at the code you will see that renabling the old behaviour is
easy, and I am just about to do that. Ippei's approach was to place the
two (tab and dropdown box) together, which also seemed a bit laboured. 

What I was also experimenting with was to use the filename rather than an
image number for easier identification.
