heh, the problem was my loose nut behind the keyboard, trying to use 
gtk-sharp-1.9.3 rather than gtk-sharp-1.0.6! One compilation and 
installation of gtk-sharp-1.0.6, and everything works!

:-)

Now I can relax a little and get on with panorama stitching with 64bit 
goodness!
