One other noise reduction program is greystoration which is included as a demo 
for of the CImg library http://cimg.sourceforge.net/ .

It is difficult to learn what are the best settings but it is very powerful.

There is also a GIMP plug-in that uses this code and Krita also has a plug-in.  
In addition if you compile CImg you will also get a command line version that 
will allow you to work with 16 bit images (you can also do this in Krita).
