I thought that the "make install" is always run as root? That's the only
step you have to conduct in your chrooted environment I presume. I.e.:

[bruno] ./configure --prefix=/usr
[bruno] make

[root] chroot ...
[root] make install

[bruno] <build RPM>

Alternatively I guess you may even do a "su -l bruno" as root to become
bruno in the chrooted environment.
