Another option is to attempt to do away with feathering entirely by tracing
natural (high contrast) seams -- building edges, tree outlines, etc.

This is what I do when stitching artwork.  Very slight differences in 
brightness
are very visible, but are totally hidden with no quality-degradation effects by
tracing edges.
