> Collaborative Targeted Initiative on Skills and Knowledge for Sustainable Communities
> The ESRC, in partnership with the Academy for Sustainable Communities (http://www.ascskills.org.uk/pages/home) (ASC), wishes to commission 8-12 small research projects addressing a number of identified priority areas relating to the development of skills and knowledge for sustainable communities.
> The overall aim of this new £800,000 joint initiative is to support independent, high quality research that links new thinking, ideas and knowledge to the development of skills and practice in the sustainable communities field.
> The initiative builds on consultations undertaken earlier in 2006 by the ASC and ESRC, including two workshops organised by the Regional Studies Association in Leeds and London:

> The research supported will be expected to demonstrate relevance to the English context but research involving a broader UK and international context is also strongly encouraged. The initiative is being taken forward in collaboration with the Scottish Centre for Regeneration (http://www.scr.communitiesscotland.gov.uk/) which has agreed to support the dissemination of results in a Scottish context, and may collaborate further as the initiative develops.
> This is a targeted initiative focused on addressing a number of key challenges for research, policy and practice. The scope of the call within which applications must fall is defined in the call specification.
> Full applications for small one-year research grants of between £15,000 and £100,000 (fEC), to start in March/April 2007 are invited from researchers in all relevant disciplines based at UK higher education research institutions and other research institutions eligible for funding from the ESRC in partnership with other organisations, as appropriate.
> The deadline for submitting applications to the ESRC through the Joint Electronic Submission (Je-S) Service is 4.00pm on 28 November 2006; proposals received after this deadline will not be accepted.
> The following documents should be used in making applications under this initiative:
