Subject: Gender and ICTs in a Global Society Workshop in Manchester: Call for Abstracts

One-Day Workshop on "Gender and ICTs in a Global Society"
Tuesday 6th June 2006
Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester, UK

This one-day workshop of the UK Development Studies Association "Information, Technology and Development" study group looks at the integration of gender issues into both processes and outcomes of the "information society".

On the one hand we have evidence that ICTs can bring benefits to women: access to critical information and services, and increased economic and social opportunities through ICT-based employment or enterprise development. On the other hand, there are signs that ICT-based activity merely reproduces - even reinforces - existing gendered inequalities.

This workshop invites presentations with new evidence on women's engagement with ICTs and the information society at an individual and/or collective level. Presentations may be drawn from a broad theoretical and empirical range. We have a particular interest in evidence from developing countries but also seek research from a western context where there is some global connection.

The deadline for submission of a c.250-word abstract is 31st March 2006, with final presentations/papers due in May. Abstract submissions should be made to Richard Heeks (richard.heeks at manchester.ac.uk), convenor of the I,T&D study group.

Some funding may be available to pay within-UK-only travel expenses for presenters at the workshop. The workshop will include presentation of findings from the UK Department for International Development-funded "Women's ICT-Based Enterprise for Development" project (www.womenictenterprise.org).

Do please pass details on to relevant colleagues.

The workshop is co-organised by Shoba Arun (s.arun at mmu.ac.uk), Institute for Global Studies, Manchester Metropolitan University; and Richard Heeks, Development Informatics Group, IDPM, University of Manchester.
