The top line of a binsrc file normally says:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!-- -*-xml-*- -->

Now, you're saying that you had put an "à" character into the file in
a comment.  Although you don't say so, I assume you mean that you had
put such a character there with an editor that uses the iso-latin-1
character set and not utf8.  This was the problem.

Either you should use an editor that writes out in utf-8, or you
should change the bit at the top of the file that says "UTF-8" to read
"ISO-8859-1".
