Right, this sounds reasonable, but extracting and putting this
information on the details-page still seems desirable.  Therefor bins
would need read support for these fields.

I think you could just utf8-encode your unicode strings and store them
in every text-field.  This is what utf8 is for, after all.

This might also be a strength: a standardized set of fields.  Maybe we
don't need customized fields after all?
